The Shaker Inn, built in 1869, is perhaps one of the most beautiful buildings in our country. The Shakers were known for their exrtraordinary architecture which evolved into some of the finest examples of Federal style architecture known. It is once again a lovely inn and one can spend the night and have breakfast there. A link to the Shaker web site can be found on the home page of this web site.

This is the front facade of the historic old Shaker Store and Post Office at South Union. The current Shaker Store and Post Office was built in a corner of the front lawn and closer to the railroad tracks in 1917. The structure dates from about 1869 but could possible be older. The house and its grounds were purchased by Bud Perkins for daughter Nellie and son-in-law Roy Andrews as a wedding gift in 1922. W.C. "Doc" Andrew, an Auburn personality, was born there in 1928, and he recalls a special pass-thru in a door to receive the mail. There was no water in the house until 1968; electricity was put in in 1935. The building currently awaits restoration.

461 West Main Street has been known by several other names; however, for contemporary times it can be known as the Dr. C. A. Wood house. It was built sometime in the last quarter of the 19th century but added to several times through the 1950's. It is vaguely of Federal design with center hall. The lace-work wrought iron posts supporting the entry roof are of much later addition. The house is presently owned by another prominent Auburn family who have shown great respect for the architectural integrity of this home.

211 W. Main Street. A nice example of the second half of the 1800's house. Apparently the original clapboard sheathing has not been covered with vinyl siding. And being on the main street in town, fortunes allowed a much nicer structure to evolve with later but appropriate additions. For many years this building was known as the Stagner House. A particularly nice feature of this property is the cast iron fence as it extends to the neighboring properrty at 125 Main Street. This could typify Main Street USA in any small town.
